View from the Yosemite Valley floor. Yosemite Valley in the western Sierra Nevada mountains in California was formed by glaciers during the ice age. Yosemite was designated a national park in 1890 and is also a UNESCO designated World Heritage Site. The valley is about 7.5 miles long and is at an elevation of 4,000 feet above sea level. The valley walls rise up to an additional 3,500 feet from the valley floor.
Constructed between 1919 and 1923, O’Shaughnessy Dam forms the Hetch Hetchy Reservoir that provides water for San Francisco and other Bay Area cities. San Francisco is about 160 miles west of Hetch Hetchy. The dam is 430 feet high.
